Mobile Satellite TV System - Information and the Best Deals on Antennas and Equipment

Mobile Satellite TV System

Thanks to modern technology you can now watch satellite TV whether you're on the road or at sea.
Mobile satellite TV systems can be installed in an RV, boat, or even in a car or van, giving you the freedom to travel wherever you want and watch satellite TV wherever you are. You can even connect to the Internet.

Mobile Satellite TV Antenna

A mobile satellite TV antenna, also called a dish, captures the signal being sent from a satellite in orbit above the earth and sends it to a receiver.
You can get a free satellite antenna when you subscribe to a satellite TV service, or you can purchase a specialized antenna that automatically tracks a satellite so you can watch TV while on the move.
Mounts for an antenna can be as simple as a tripod that you set up outside, or as complex as a combination antenna/receiver that tracks a satellite and converts the satellite signal for TV viewing.
Prices for satellite TV antennas and mounts vary from $30 for a simple tripod stand to more than $7,000 for a marine satellite TV antenna/receiver with automatic tracking.

Mobile Satellite TV Equipment

In addition to a satellite TV dish you'll also need a receiver to decode the satellite TV signal and send it to your TV.
Both DISH Network and DIRECTV will give you a free dish and up to four free receivers when you subscribe to their service. They will even give you a free DVR (digital video recorder) receiver or an HD (high definition) receiver. You can purchase specialized receivers for vehicle and marine applications.
To get an idea of what's available, go online and do an Internet search for "mobile satellite tv equipment" and "mobile satellite tv antenna." If you're an RVer, search for "RV satellite TV system" and "RV satellite TV antenna." If you're a boating enthusiast search for "marine satellite TV system" and "marine satellite tv antenna."
When you get a good idea of what you want, go to a shopping comparison site such as Froogle.com, and do a search there to find the best prices.

Satellite TV Providers

DISH Network, DIRECTV, and Sky Angel are the three satellite TV providers in the U.S.
DISH Network offers 350 channels of satellite TV programming with prices starting at $19.99 for their 40-channel package. Their programming includes movie channels, sports packages, Sirius satellite radio channels, news and weather channels, game channels, and pay-per-view movies and special events.

How Satellite TV Works

Satellite Receiver

DirecTV receiver

The end component in the entire satellite TV system is the receiver. The receiver has four essential jobs:

  • It de-scrambles the encrypted signal. In order to unlock the signal, the receiver needs the proper decoder chip for that programming package. The provider can communicate with the chip, via the satellite signal, to make necessary adjustments to its decoding programs. The provider may occasionally send signals that disrupt illegal de-scramblers as an electronic counter measure (ECM) against illegal users.
  • It takes the digital MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 signal and converts it into an analog format that a standard television can recognize. In the United States, receivers convert the digital signal to the analog National Television Systems Committee (NTSC) format. Some dish and receiver setups can also output an HDTV signal.
  • It extracts the individual channels from the larger satellite signal. When you change the channel on the receiver, it sends just the signal for that channel to your TV. Since the receiver spits out only one channel at a time, you can't tape one program and watch another. You also can't watch two different programs on two TVs hooked up to the same receiver. In order to do these things, which are standard on conventional cable, you need to buy an additional receiver.
  • It keeps track of pay-per-view programs and periodically phones a computer at the provider's headquarters to communicate billing information.

When patients spend their days on hospital days, they not only fight the disease or injury that bring them here but also fight the loneliness that they suffer when their close ones leave them at the end of the visiting hours. Medicines do cure the physical ailments but the mind needs something to survive as well. In fact mental refreshment helps patients in healing injuries and recovering from diseases quickly. Keeping this in mind, modern health care centers in USA are making arrangements for entertainment for their patients by installing DISH Network. With its plethora of packages loaded with hundreds of channels that air endless varieties of programs, DISH Network is the undisputed leader in the satellite TV service segment in the US and is the greatest entertainment for people of all kinds.

People with different choices and fascinations come as patients to the hospitals and nursing homes. Some are fond of movies while some are fond of music and cultural shows. Sports may be a little exciting for a patient’s ailing condition, but at times of mental depression, such excitement may do some good. Laughing is a great medicine for mental depression and there are plenty of DISH channels that offer popular comedy shows round the clock.  According to medical surveys, people who keep thinking about their diseases and injuries take longer to recover as the stress hormones make negative impact on the recovery process. They feel it is necessary to keep a person’s focus away from his/her physical problems as much as possible. An entertaining talk show or a classic movie can help a person push aside all worries about the reasons of his/her hospitalization for at least a few hours.

Dish TV Appoints Quasar As Exclusive Sales Partner

Dish TV has appointed Quasar as its exclusive sales partner for platform sales. As a key business partner, Quasar’s main focus would be to monetize the platform through advertising inventories, alliances, partnerships, sponsorships and innovative solutions enabling marketers to reach out to their target audience.

Salil Kapoor, COO, Dish TV said, “The DTH category is already 25 mn+ households which is around 30% of the C&S (cable & satellite) homes and is growing rapidly towards 33 mn Households by the end of this year. This rapid expansion of DTH cannot be ignored by any informed marketer or media buyer. Dish TV with its 8 million subscribers is one third of this base, straightway giving advertisers a reach into 8mn homes. Advertisers across segments are warming up to this True new media innovation and are chalking out advertising plans suited to their businesses. We are looking at this as a big opportunity and we are sure our partnership with Quasar will help us reach out to the marketing fraternity”.

“Dishtv is a market leader in the DTH space with more than 8 million subscribers who become a captive audience for advertisers and this is what would work in our favor while designing attractive solutions for the new age advertisers.” said Manish Vij, Co-founder-Quasar.

Innovations offered by Dish TV include direct access to 8mn households through its default channel and associations with the latest blockbusters on Movie on Demand at a nominal cost. DTH is as transparent for advertisers as it is for the broadcasting industry.

How to Install a Satellite Dish

Allsat is currently offering free installation with all of their Satellite TV Packages, which will save you a lot of time..trust me.

It is very essential that the satellite dish is mounted properly, so that the broadcast signals are received correctly. The satellite broadcasting TV is geostationary and is at a height of 22,300 miles above the equator. It travels from west to east and if viewed from earth appears to be at a single spot.

The first step in mounting the satellite is to find out the elevation and azimuth. The city, state and the satellite has to be input and the satellite position, latitude, longitude, azimuth, elevation and the skew or the LNBF Tilt would be the output. Now, that the angles of azimuth and elevation are known, it is necessary to have a look to make sure there are no obstructions in the direction of the satellite. If the satellite dish is to be mounted on a flat beam or roof, then the base of the satellite dish must be parallel to the mounting surface. If the roof is a slanting one, the satellite dish must be at a proper angle to the roofline.

Now, the satellite dish can be fixed on the mounting surface. Further, the dish has to be adjusted such that the dish mast is exactly perpendicular to the level. This can be thoroughly achieved using a carpenter’s level. Now, the satellite dish is properly set. It has to be aimed towards the satellites.

Setting the elevation and azimuth

To set the correct elevation, first the nuts that fasten the two elevation bolts have to be loosened. Now, it becomes possible to move the dish upwards and downwards. The elevation indicator has to be lined up with the tick mark that corresponds to the elevation number. Then, the bolts can be tightened. There may be a need to readjust the elevation slightly upwards and downwards to procure the optimum signal. To set the appropriate azimuth, the azimuth nuts on the LNB arm have to be loosened in such a way that the dish can be rotated in a smooth manner with some pressure. The dish has to be moved towards the right or left to set the azimuth. The dish must point toward the southern hemisphere, which is the general direction of the satellite. A compass should be used to match the azimuth number with the degrees on the compass.

Dish TV blames I&B for lack of portability

The issue of portability among direct-to-home (DTH) set-top boxes offered by the six private operators has taken a serious turn with country’s leading DTH operator Dish TV blaming the ministry of information and broadcasting (I&B) for derailing and delaying its implementation.

Dish TV has accused the ministry of inaction in the last 18 months since it received the DTH standards recommended by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for MPEG-4 set-top boxes. “ issued by BIS in March 2009, after it was duly endorsed by all DTH operators, the I&B ministry has once again referred the matter to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India for consultation. This clearly shows inaction and a deliberate delay on part of the government in implementing interoperability,” a senior Dish TV executive said.

The matter gains significance because currently the portability of DTH boxes is being heard by TDSAT after a complaint was made by a Tamil Nadu-based NGO. In the case, all stakeholders including the I&B ministry, Trai and the private DTH operators have been made party. Also, the Competition Commission of India has also investigated the matter to see if all DTH operators are in collusion and thereby not offering portable DTH boxes.

ZOMBIE'S MOTORISED SATELLITE TV

A general worklog/guide of setting up a 1.5 meter offset dish and installing a H-H motor.

Gibertini 1.5 m offset dish
Jaeger SMR-1224 H-H motor
Channelmaster C120 Feedhorn
2 x Invacom LNB's
VBox II

It was hard to choose a dish, was leaning towards the Channelmaster and here the choice was either a 1.2m or a 1.8m. One being a bit too small and the other too large (if thats possible). The 1.8m would also need a powerful motor.
The 1.5m Gibertini dish sounded quite interesting as there is an adapter plate for it which makes it fit perfect on the well known Jaeger 1224 motor, didnt want too many complications, im a noob. One day though i would love to own a 1.8m Channelmaster. Nonetheless this should be a good entry level dish for a motorized system..

Went on a shopping spree and before i knew it i had the dish, motor and adapter plate.
Next was to have a stand to mount it on.

The buttom of groundstand was not needed and would only make the job harder, dont know where i got the idea from..
Also the angle was changed from 45° to 30°.
I was still worried that the support arms would restrict movement to the far east and west positions. However in the end this was not a problems in the furthest east/west positions as the motor and adapterplate extended the distance to the dish, so maybe this design can be useful to you! (what are the odds on that?).

3 holes where dug into the ground, each about 70-80 cm deep. The bad news was the cement needed atleast 3 weeks to dry before doing anything further. I was not prepared for this..but no doubt gave me an opportunity to take a photo of the groundstand. Would be a better choice with the fast hardening stuff cause really i just wanted to get the system up and running and watch some exotic channels! No not erotic channels.

DIGIMATCH EXPLORER CARAVAN ANTENNA FITTED WITH GME KINGRAY MASTHEAD AMPLIFIER

We have been looking for a caravan antenna that offers excellent performance and is still compact enough to fold away in a caravan.  We have had in the past, omni-directional UFO style units but they just don't offer the same performance as a 'proven design' UHF/VHF combo.  There is a simple rule when it comes to TV reception 'the smaller the antenna, the lower the performance'.

The Digimatch Explorer is designed to enable reception of UHF and VHF on either vertical, horizontal or a combination of both.  This is important as TV signals are broadcast in different 'polarities' from the many TV transmitter towers around Australia.

We are supplying the Digimatch Explorer with a high quality, GME kingray masthead amplifier and power supply.  The power supply is 13VDC so could be powered using a cigarette style plug.  The masthead amplifier is fully shielded to minimise interference as well.We include a 15m coaxial RG6 quad shield cable to run from the amplifier to the power supply inside the van.

If you can't get a signal with this setup then the signal is just not there to be picked up and no caravan antenna will fix this.

Heavy Duty construction
Stainless Steel connection screws
Black UV resistant plastics
Boom length: 720mm
Max. width: 880mm
Powder coated boom (blue)
F type connections on Balun

Dish TV Receivers

Dish TV receivers are the final components of the entire satellite system. The receiver has some essential features. First of all, it de-scrambles the encoded signal. In order to decode the signal, the receiver needs a decoder chip according to that channels package.
The providers can communicate with the decoder chip via the satellite signal and sometimes may issue some signals to detect illegally installed decoders. They do that. Other features of the TV dish receivers can be met. They can retrieve from providers information about the TV programs and can display it on the screen as a programming guide. Many receivers have Parental Lock-Out options, and some have digital video recorders included in their structure that allow recording of the desired programs on a hard disk.
The TV dish receivers market is represented mainly by the large multinational companies such as Sony (the biggest electronics manufacturer in the world), Panasonic, Thomson, Samsung, Sharp, Philips, Toshiba, Hitachi, Daewoo, Domotec, Blaupunkt etc.

dish tv receivers Sales varies little. Economic, political and social conditions do not influence too much the demand for these products, and this fact is an asset for counterfeiters and retailers of the fakes.Companies (especially Sony, Panasonic, Samsung) that produce high quality dish TV receivers practice relatively high prices because of the large investments in research and developing technologies they made for production of quality receivers. Generally, besides these factors that are positively influencing the forgery of the TV receivers, it can be added the lack of consumers information regarding the original products, an insufficient education to understand the risk involved by using counterfeit devices. In recent years, great efforts made by manufacturing companies in order to protect against counterfeiting temporarily reduced this negative element of society today.
Criteria for recognition of counterfeits:lower prices, place of origin linked to mark indicates a false, original devices are equipped with holograms, the mark is visible.
